My father is a doctor. I learned about fixing first-hand when I was dropped off a finishing school as a young teen to be fixed up. At that age I wasn’t able to see to the intention underneath. The helplessness and fear that can lead one to fix. If you grow up learning that fixing is a form of love, you can experience it that way. I too am all too tempted to think I can fix almost any problem or person.

Do you really care who solves our problems? Beyond the Binary.

I don’t. To me this was the entire point of registering Independent. At the time I thought: “Damn, if the Democratic party can’t get a liberal, Jewish, Canadian queer chick like me to register Democrat, they’re in trouble.”But this point, of focussing on our shared problems and doing things to make them better entirely eludes Stanley Fish, who blogged today Against Independent Voters.In his lofty NYT estimation, Independents don’t really want to stand for anything except avoid politics which we hate.  Continue reading…

The next THGS theme is Service, or My Needs / Your Needs. GuestJeff Veen is puzzled this tension as it relates to making stuff (in his case web design)–how do you have the humility to serve others (which he thinks make good web design) and satisfy yourself?

Our second guest will probably be a wonderful erotica writer, poet and Intersex activist and our third will hopefully be someone who has dedicated their life to serving others.

I’m working on the next Heather Gold Show. The theme? My Needs / Your Needs. We’re talking about service.

Jeff Veen says the best web designers have to have empathy in order to serve the users needs rather than their own. But what about the creator? 

I just got married and it seems like a major life commitment to the conundrum of meeting my own needs and my partner’s too.  It seems to provide a solution too, but it’s not one I can yet articulate.
